YWCA Expansion Grand Opening
APF Founder Stephany Alexander and President Cathy Cardenas attended the Grand Opening for the YWCA Expansion of the McCarthey Residence and Kathleen Robison Huntsman Residence. Two new buildings were opened that feature the ability to hold 350 homeless and abused women and children. The McCarthey Residence offers crisis housing for 30 days and the Kathleen Robison Residence provides extended-stay residence for up to 6 months as well as twelve apartments for single woman where they pay a small monthly rent for room and board for up to two years. For five years the YWCA has dreamed of creating a campus where women and children could have a safe, healing environment to escape family violence and abuse. These new additions have tripled the YWCA's shelter capacity from 50 to 150 beds since 2005.
In addition to the housing the property offers a cafe to provide meals, a meditation room, a boutique offering clothes, diapers and other donated items. They also offer drop-in child care that providesa safe place to care for children while women attend appointments and court hearings. There is an after-school and summer-camp center for children and a room for teens. The project includes their "Center for Families" offering wellness, educational, social and justice services.
